Yeah, I know, I know. I know it’s crazy. I’ve been battling within me about writing this article because even the title itself is controversial. And coming from a guy who life has dealt with mercilessly, having graduated high school in a harsh racial environment and a hostile step dad and very unpleasant circumstances that forced him to work three jobs to see himself through college it is absurd to say the least but then again, God speaks I write. That was the agreement we had from the beginning so just walk with me, would you?
Matthew 19:27 [MSG] 'Then Peter chimed in, “We left everything and followed you. What do we get out of it?”'
In my three decades on this planet, I have never met anyone who’s come out bluntly and said ‘life is fair’ neither have I ever stumbled upon a book or a talk about how fair life is. The catastrophe of life is that it kinda seems to reward the opposite. There are so many people in this walk of life asking themselves difficult questions. Why should I be diligent in what I do if life rewards mediocrity? And why again should I care for someone deeply if at the end of the day they are just gonna walk away? What’s the point in doing good if all people remember is the one stupid mistake we made? Why do bad things happen to good people?
Peter was in the very same position thousands of years ago. ‘’We have left everything and followed you’’ he said. And for what Lord? For what? What’s in it for us? You can feel the frustration in his voice but I love the response Jesus gives in the subsequent verses
Matthew 19:28 [NIV] Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.
Maybe the question here is not whether life is fair or not. Maybe the real question is which life is fair? I haven’t lived long to know so many things in life but I have lived long enough to know one thing, that God is faithful. He doesn’t promise things for the sake of it, He just never says nice things to us out of excitement or because He’s in a good mood, faithful is not just what He is, it is who He is.
You’ve probably heard it said it gets darker just before dawn you know why? Because the simple truth is sojourning this walk of life ain’t easy but listen, every time bad things happen in someone’s life; good things are always right behind waiting for their turn to happen. There’s a reward in this life, your diligence can never go unrewarded, your faithfulness and your generosity can never go to waste because a man reaps what he sows and God is just enough not to turn a blind eye to that. It might take a little while but pressed down, shaken together and running over is your portion if you do not give up hope. So whether it looks like it or not, whether it feels like it or not,
Child of God, life is fair
